We have had some cold weather lately so when the temperature got over 70 today, we knew it was a park day. I had gone to the garage sale at Olivia's preschool this morning and promised Olivia I would take her to the park when I got back.
So, I did my shopping and came home. I got her and Caroline all dressed and ready to go to the park. Jay has a big presentation for the RSNA conference in a few weeks, so I was taking both girls. Plus, I thought it would be good for both of them to get some fresh air. I have taken both of them to the park many times now, and we have been fine.
Today, we went on the swings. I was feeding Caroline and still got Olivia in a bucket swing all by myself!! After swinging, Olivia played in the sand a bit...then she decided to play in the grass with a big stick. I put a blanket out for Caroline so she could enjoy the nice weather too!! Well, Olivia decided she wanted to go play again. She wanted to ride on the zipline. I told her no bc I had Caroline on the grass and I couldn't help her right then. So, she played on something else and kept going back to it. Finally, I decided I would go ahead and pick up Caroline and help Olivia on the zipline bc we were about to go home. Olivia was waiting her turn. A man was helping his kids or grandkids on it. I came over to help Olivia. The man was very nice and asked if he could help. I politely said no, that I could do it, but he said "Are you sure? I don't mind." I asked Olivia if he could help her and she said YES. I couldn't believe it!!! Well...he put her on the zipline. She was holding on and he was holding on to her but as she started to go, he let go. Well...she hung on a few seconds and then fell off. The fall was not good. She landed on her left leg wrong and she went straight to the ground crying. The man carried her to the bench, and we looked at her leg. It wasn't swelling yet and nothing was jutting out, but Olivia was screaming. I even asked her if she wanted to play more or go home bc usually that is an indication of how bad she is hurt. Well, she wanted to go. That meant something was wrong.
So...we came home to see Dr.Daddy. She was still crying heavily at this time. Jay looked at her leg and tried to see if she could put weight on it. She wasn't able to. He didn't see any swelling on it either so we put Olivia on the couch for a little bit with some ice to see how she felt after she calmed down some. It is VERY difficult to get straight answers out of a 2 year old who is hysterical. I made Olivia some lunch too. She calmed down and ate. We tried to get her to put weight on it again but she just cried. At this point, we were pretty sure sprained her ankle but didn't think it was broken. Olivia and I went to rest in the bed together and watch Mickey before nap. After nap, I got her off the bed and had her standing beside the bed. I reached up to get her blanket and pillow off of my bed. Evidently she was holding on to me instead of the bed and when I moved, she lost her balance. Instead of standing on her foot, she fell to the ground. I thought at this point that she had a bad sprain for sure. We decided that if she was still hurt after nap, we would head to the hospital.
She laid down fine for nap and went right to sleep...but she woke up about 30 minutes later screaming that her leg was hurting. So...it was time to head to the hospital.
We got in the car and headed to MOBAP (Missouri Baptist). Luckily, that have a Children's ER so she didn't have to stay in the waiting room with all the sick people. She seemed very calm to actually be at the hospital, and I was second guessing our decision to bring her. Her nurse, Gina, was awesome. She was funny and definitely made Olivia feel at ease. She even put on a movie about princesses for Olivia!!
Olivia got an x-ray on her leg and we waited to see the doctor. Olivia was fine during all of this. She was super brave, especially with this being her first visit to the ER (and hopefully her last). The doctor came in and looked at the leg. By this point, she found just a tiny bit of swelling at the back of the foot/leg, but that was all she could see. She read the radiology report and told us Olivia actually had a break in her leg. Jay and I both were shocked...I even started tearing up bc I couldn't believe it. She broke her fibula right in the middle of her knee and foot.
Next, they put her in a splint and told us to follow up with the orthapedist in the next 2-4 days. Pool Olivia will be getting a cast.
Again, I am still in shock. I can't believe my 2 year old has a broken leg. I know things happen and it isn't a big deal...but I can't believe it. Luckily, Olivia is a brave girl and will make it through this crazy experience...hoping the rest of us make it through too!!! Right now, we are up at 4am watching Mickey on the couch bc Olivia woke up screaming that her leg was really hurting. We got another dose of Tylenol and am waiting for it to kick in so she isn't upset anymore...poor girl.
Hopefully, the next time I write, I will have happier things to write about!!!
In the waiting room of the ER.
Watching a princess movie while we wait on the doctor.
Getting her splint
Being so brave!!!
Getting some cute sunglasses bc she did such a good job!!
Leaving the hospital all bandaged up...until we get the cast this week.
